Record year for Wasaline - Strong growth continues in all segments

news-details

Wasaline carried 267 757 passengers (107 659 in 2021) between Vaasa and Umeå in 2022. Passenger volume increased by 149 percent despite Covid-19 travel restrictions being in place until March. After the restrictions were lifted Wasaline has broken passenger records every month.

The departures of Aurora Botnia increased by 14 percent from 990 to 1 133 departures. The amount of passenger vehicles transported increased by 126 percent.

Wasaline’s freight services also broke existing records. Transportation of cargo increased by 4.4 percent when measured in cargo units. The increase in tonnes was 11.5 %. The Russian invasion of Ukraine that started in February caused the price of energy to dramatically increase. Also, as the year progressed, market uncertainty grew and started to impact the demand for freight services.

Turnover for Wasaline increased by 78.6 percent.

“With our Aurora Botnia, the most environmentally friendly passenger ferry in the world, I am expecting further growth in passenger and freight volumes. We can clearly see how both our passengers and cargo customers appreciate the ongoing efforts to minimize the environmental footprint of our operations. In 2022 we were able to reduce energy consumption by 21 % per trip and our CO2-emissions by 19.6 %”, states Peter Ståhlberg, Managing Director of Wasaline.

“Our strong market position enables us to stay in the forefront and implement new innovations that benefit the environment. We hope that the preconditions to operate this route stay the same and that Finland doesn’t allow exceptions to emissions trading for shipping in the Baltic Sea.”

“Finally, I would like to thank all our freight customers and passengers. I would also like to thank our personnel who are doing an outstanding job for keeping the costs down and keeping this route, which is vital to Finland’s security of supply, running flawlessly every day”, Ståhlberg concludes.
